Save Money on Your Costco Membership

Wanna know how to save money on your Costco membership? Because it’s actually pretty easy to do. With any Costco membership registration you receive a free spouse card. The best part about this is that your spouse doesn’t actually have to be your spouse. As noted on the Costco website:

A Spouse refers to either a spouse or a family member 18 years of age or older living at the same address.

Since me and my older sister are always looking to save some money, we decided to make this work in our favour and get a Costco membership together. Although we had both already moved out of our parents’ home when we got our shared Costco memberships, we still had their address on our driver’s licenses so we were applicable for the free spouse card (thank you loophole!).

So, what would have cost us $55 per year each, now only costs $27.50 per year each. I know this doesn’t sound like a lot of money, but just look at it this way. If we both got our own individual Costco memberships and continued to renew them for the next 10 years, we’d be paying $550 each just for the privilege of buying cereal and chicken in bulk. Since we’re splitting the cost, we’re both saving $275 each. Just think of all the bulk vitamins and canned soup that could buy!

My BF and his step-dad do the same thing and they don’t even share the same last name so I’d definitely pull out the “We’re cousins or step-relatives” excuse when signing up with a distant relative or roommate. To top it all of, you can request to automatically renew your membership every year via credit card, avoiding any need to renew in-store. So, technically, I could move to Montreal and my sister could stay in Vancouver and we’d still be able to share our Costco membership. Not too shabby, plus the poutine and dollar hot dogs are well worth the $27.50 a year.

*Update (Feb. 2014): Wouldn’t you know it, I did actually move (to Toronto, not Montreal)! And yes, my sister and I still share a Costco membership. We probably will until our dying days, or until we are two weak to lift a Costco-size of pickles.

So what I got from this is you have a BF as well as an F!!

  2. Dave, is that you? Haha. Thanks for reading :)

  3. Also forgot to mention you can only auto-renew your membership if you sign up for a Costco AMEX. I’d suggest getting an AMEX anyways because it’s free and Costco doesn’t accept any other credit cards.
