Before I knew how much I would have to spend to fix my poor computer, I was in desperate need of some alcoholic happiness. Straight from the Apple store I went to the Liquor store and I thought it would be a great opportunity to taste test some never been heard of cheap local beer.
Now, I would kind of consider myself a beer snob. If I’m out and one of my friend’s orders a Budweiser, I will judge them. I mean how could I not? This is Canada, the land of delicious beer, what are you doing? Plus the local beer in Vancouver alone is amazing. If you’ve never had a Granville Island Winter Ale, you’ll never know what Christmas tastes like.
Here are my reviews:
Big Surf Beer Co. - Laid Back Lager (Kelowna, BC) - Price tag $7.99 for a six-pack
I was actually pleasantly surprised by this beer. The main reason I got it was because the can reminded me of iced tea and that made me happy. But when I started drinking it, it was actually sort of nice. It’s a light, kind of watery beer, so if you are more of a dark ale type of beer drinker you’ll probably hate this. It sort of tastes like Pabst Blue Ribbon but a bit better, but maybe that’s just because it hasn’t been tainted yet by the hipster crowd. It was pretty hard to find a review of this beer though. The only review I found was from this Beer Club video series by this couple who reviews different beers at their home. Here are some of their best review quotes:
“It’s not beer-y.” “It tastes like cheap beer.” “Don’t fall asleep this time” “I don’t get out much” and lastly “I mean, I’ll finish this one, but as for the other 4 in the fridge…I dunno”. - Beer Club couple
You guys are amazing. Keep up the good work. For the full 7:45 min. video, click here.
Pacific Western - Canterbury Dark Mild (Prince George, BC) - Price tag $8.85 for a six-pack
Not great. It’s basically just watery dark ale. This beer had even fewer reviews on the web. All I could find were some random reviews on some beer forum called beeradvocate.com. Here are the best review quotes:
“It’s nothing special, but it’s cheap.” - JHutton
“drinkable, but not very memorable.” - biboergosum
“It’s a sugar bomb. Not only would I never purchase this beer (luckily I got this one for free), I wouldn’t recommend high levels of it to anyone who cares for their health.” - Graham5161986
There you have it. They both aren’t great, but if I only had ten dollars and some guy was pointing a gun to my head and told me I needed to by a six-pack of beer and drink all of it in front of him or he would shoot me, I would go with the Big Surf. Gees, that was sort of a morbid scenario wasn’t it? I think I’ve been watching too much Sons of Anarchy.
Got any suggestions of other cheap beer I should try?
